Oliver Hydcovalves Are Hydrogen Ready

Oliver Hydcovalves manufactures valves for hydrogen and carbon capture applications that support the Net Zero Emissions Targets of industrial users.

Innovation and manufacturing of high precision quality valves has earned Oliver a global reputation as the market-leader in Instrumentation, Transportation, Pipeline and Subsea valves. Research and development are a fundamental part of our success and dedicated testing facilities in Knutsford, England, has enabled us to once again be an industry first to qualify our ball valve with hydrogen. The valve was designed and tested to Oliver Hydcovalves own qualification standard that incorporates the requirements of ISO 15848-1 and was then verified by a third-party with hydrogen.

The future is now, change is constant and we embrace new ideas and ways of operation. This is why our R&D engineering team is comprised of long-term employees that know the industry, supported by new generations of engineers through our apprenticeship programme and university graduates, who all share a common motivation: to be the best at what we do. Test facilities include a hyperbaric chamber that’s capable of testing valves to an equivalent water depth of 13,600 ft. designed for subsea applications such as carbon dioxide storage, enhanced well recovery and subsea hydrogen storage.

Valves we have available for hydrogen application now include transportation valves qualified in three bore sizes to meet the requirements of ISO 19880-3 and pipeline valves that are metal-seated, endurance tested to over 400 cycles and after which remain rated with zero leakage.

The growing demand for green and more sustainable energy such as hydrogen makes it a natural step forward for Oliver Hydcovalves. Drawing on five decades of manufacturing and engineering expertise in the supply of topside and subsea valves to the oil, gas and petrochemical industries, it puts us firmly out in front to meet this new demand for hydrogen energy.

Hydrogen Valves Go into Production at Oliver Hydcovalves

Orders have started to roll off the production line for Oliver’s NEW Hydrogen double block & bleed and ball valves. After months of Research & Development and meticulous testing at our purpose-built R&D facilities in the UK, the ball valve was passed and certified for Hydrogen application by Third Party Inspectors in July of this year.

Various DBB and single isolate ball valves with 14mm Bore Flange to Flange have gone into full production having taken another order, this time from Rockfin. Valves pictured here can be seen undergoing pressure testing on our recently installed state-of-the-art test rigs, and are scheduled for immediate dispatch to Poland

The valves meet with stringent ISO 15848-1:2015 Tightness class B certification including ISO 5208:2015 zero seat leakage rate A. This has been achieved with precision engineering and providing a high-quality seal face finish.

Oliver Hydcovalves Wins Significant European Order for Hydrogen DBBs

Rockfin are a world-leading engineering company specializing in the design, manufacture, testing and servicing of oil and fuel systems for gas turbines, steam turbines, generators, compressors and high-pressure drives and control systems. Working very closely with MAN Energy Solutions Schweiz AG, Rockfin recently secured an order to supply two skid packages to the Lysekil Refinery in Sweden.

Rockfin already had close relationships with Oliver Valves from previous projects, but with the application demanding products suitable for use with hydrogen as the process media, the enquiry was quickly diverted to Oliver Hydcovalves; the latest addition to the Oliver family of companies dedicated to new energy applications.

We were able to present Oliver Hydcovalves to the Rockfin team, exploring the technical challenges driven by hydrogen valves applications and showing how we have developed valve technology specifically to meet these challenges head on.

Rockfin’s confidence in our new brand and knowledge of hydrogen valve technology convinced them to place a significant order for a number of isolation manifold block valves in both DB and DBB configuration.

Rob Porter, Area Sales Manager for Oliver Hydcovalves states, “Once we were engaged with the team at Rockfin, we quickly worked through their requirements and matched our hydrogen compatible products to their specific needs. We are really excited by the opportunity to work with a highly professional and technically capable company like Rockfin on sustainable energy projects such as this.”

These valves will utilise fully hydrogen compatible materials, including the latest polymer seal technology design specifically to meet the demands of hydrogen applications. Both stem and seat seal arrangements have been tested at Oliver’s in-house R&D facility to ensure long service life, reliability and safety.

Oliver Hydcovalves continues to develop valve technology for the emerging hydrogen energy sector, including valves for hydrogen production, storage and transportation. We are dedicated to supporting customers that strive to deliver a more sustainable future, helping them meet their net zero ambitions.
